Structure with more than two decades opens space
for medical and nursing students and residents at Unicamp

Recently elected as the best in the country's public network, the Sumaré State Hospital (HES) was designed to be not only a center for serving the population, but also an important space for academic training. In its 26 years of operation, students and residents from the Faculties of Medical Sciences (FCM) and Nursing (FEnf) of Unicamp have become integrated into the institution's routine, expanding their learning opportunities.

During the construction of the hospital by the State Government, the University was called upon to assist in the reorganization of the local health network. As part of this process, Unicamp assumed the management of the new unit through an agreement with the State Health Secretariat. Recently, the management underwent administrative changes. The Unicamp Development Foundation (Funcamp), which previously acted as an administrative intermediary, formally assumed the administration of the unit as a Social Health Organization (OSS).

Currently, around 250 resident physicians pass through the hospital every year, in addition to undergraduate students from the aforementioned colleges. The partnership also strengthens scientific research, as various studies are underway at the hospital in areas such as orthopedics, patient safety, and quality of care, expanding the production of knowledge.

According to the current director-superintendent of HES, Antonio da Silva Bastos Neto, the partnership with Unicamp remains one of the institution's pillars. He states that the interaction between students, residents, and researchers with the healthcare teams strengthens the dissemination of quality standards and creates lasting bonds with the hospital. "Many professionals who completed their medical residency at the unit later return to join the healthcare teams, contributing to the continuity of an organizational culture based on quality, safety, and continuous improvement," says the director.

Former hospital superintendent, physician and FCM professor Maurício Perroud, points out that the national recognition of the Sumaré unit demonstrates Unicamp's ability to transfer knowledge beyond the campus. “The Hospital complements the training of our students and residents because it deals with more common, everyday cases. This allows students to have an experience very close to the reality they will encounter when they are working professionally,” he assesses.

According to Perroud, the unit's care profile fulfills a fundamental stage of medical training. While the Hospital de Clínicas (HC) at Unicamp focuses on highly complex cases, the HES offers students contact with cases in the intermediate range, which are much more frequent in the routine of existing public health services in the country.

Luiz Carlos Zeferino, head of the Executive Directorate of the Health Area (Deas) at Unicamp, confirms that medical training requires experience at all levels of the healthcare network. “The Sumaré State Hospital occupies a fundamental position in this process because it offers experiences that are often no longer found in tertiary hospitals, such as certain surgical procedures and a large volume of medium-complexity care,” he explains.

The director of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCM) at Unicamp, Cláudio Coy, emphasizes that HES was created with the mission of integrating healthcare and teaching. "All of this in an environment of absolute excellence," he points out.

Lucas Roncoletta Vicentino, a second-year resident in Orthopedics and Traumatology at FCM, reinforces the high level of training available. "The Sumaré State Hospital offers an excellent learning environment and is extremely important for my technical and professional development," he affirms.

Experience

The contribution of HES to professional training also extends to nursing. The director of FEnf, Roberta Cunha Matheus Rodrigues, highlights that practical experience at different levels of complexity strengthens the integration between teaching, research, and care. “Students are supervised by professors and nursing professionals who work based on scientific evidence, strengthening this integration. The partnership also positively impacts professionals, who undergo constant updating and improvement of their practices,” she comments.

According to the hospital's assistant manager, Lílian Ferreira de Sousa Silva, a nurse at the institution for 18 years, the emphasis on continuing education is one of the hallmarks of HES's organizational culture. "I started here as a nursing technician and, thanks to the institution's partnerships, I was able to complete two postgraduate degrees. This investment in professional development has always been part of the hospital's culture," she says.

The manager also highlights that the institution invests in practices focused on humanizing care. As an example, she cites the 24-hour presence of companions in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) for adult patients, an initiative associated with increased patient safety and family satisfaction. Another distinguishing feature she points out is the appreciation of employees. Many professionals have built their entire careers within the institution, moving from patient care to leadership positions. "This shows that the hospital offers real opportunities for professional growth," she notes.

Alumni

The most recent achievement of HES was the “Best Public Hospitals in Brazil 2026 Award”, promoted by the Brazilian Institute of Social Health Organizations (Ibross). The award now considers, in addition to technical and management indicators, criteria such as user satisfaction, hospital efficiency, and... compliance and confidentiality Institutionally, the unit in Sumaré, a reference point for the Campinas Metropolitan Region (RMC), stood out in criteria such as quality of care, management efficiency, patient safety, and user satisfaction.

The institution's director states that the achievement was the result of the daily work carried out by the teams on site. "This recognition symbolizes the positive impact generated in the lives of thousands of patients and families who find safe, humane, and high-quality care at HES," highlighted Bastos Neto.

The survey initially evaluated 5.279 hospitals that serve the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) throughout the country. After applying technical criteria, the 100 best Brazilian public hospitals were selected, from which the top ten were chosen. Among the indicators analyzed were hospital accreditation, adjusted mortality rate, percentage of high-complexity hospitalizations, availability of ICU beds, occupancy rate, and average length of stay for patients.
