In Campinas, the University Administration of Unicamp will begin, starting in the first half of March, an awareness campaign aimed at sensitizing drivers to respect traffic regulations – especially those related to the use of parking spaces. According to the university's mayor, Juliano Finelli, violations of traffic laws on campus are becoming increasingly frequent – where approximately 80,000 people and at least 40,000 vehicles circulate daily, according to estimates from the Unicamp Campus Life Secretariat (SVC).
The action will be carried out jointly by the University Administration, SVC, and Emdec – the municipal agency responsible for traffic management in the city. According to Finelli, the objective is to reinforce respect for traffic and parking regulations, especially given the increase in occurrences of irregular use, such as improper occupation of reserved spaces, parking in prohibited areas, and blocking pedestrian circulation areas.

The campaign will involve the distribution of moral fines, applied in an educational manner by SVC and Emdec teams during the so-called "D-Day" of the action. Notices will be left on vehicles parked illegally, along with guidance on traffic laws and the proper use of parking spaces.
In the following days, Emdec will return to the campus for official inspection, with the possibility of issuing actual fines.
“The Unicamp campus is a collective space that needs to be cared for by everyone. The University Administration has been making consistent investments in improving road infrastructure — resurfacing, new parking spaces, revitalization of signage — but nothing replaces the role of individual awareness,” emphasizes Finelli. “Respecting traffic rules is a simple but fundamental attitude. When someone improperly occupies a reserved parking space, parks on a sidewalk, or blocks a pedestrian crossing, they not only harm mobility but also harm people. Our goal is to guide, raise awareness, and ensure a safe and accessible environment for the entire community,” he explains.

Investments
According to Finelli, the campaign comes at a time when the University Administration has intensified actions to improve internal circulation infrastructure. He stated that in 2022, Unicamp resurfaced more than 50% of the entire campus road network, modernizing roads, improving traffic conditions, and increasing safety for pedestrians and drivers.
Finelli also mentioned that horizontal and vertical signage actions were carried out, including pedestrian crossings, parking space markings, regulatory and warning signs, as part of an ongoing mobility and road safety program implemented by the City Hall. In addition, approximately 400 new parking spaces were created, distributed across seven strategic areas in the health district. Of these, 197 are exclusive spaces designated for people with disabilities and the elderly. This measure increased the availability of parking spaces and sought to alleviate the areas of greatest demand on campus.
