Anpocs Congress brings together experts and aims to defend democracy

The meeting will take place at Unicamp, between October 22nd and 24th; a virtual stage is scheduled for a week before (15th to 17th)

Considered one of the most traditional events in Anthropology, Political Science, and Sociology in Brazil, the annual meeting of Anpocs (National Association of Graduate Studies and Research in Social Sciences) will take place at Unicamp from October 22nd to 24th, focusing on the defense of democracy. This will be the 49th edition of the meeting, which will discuss major contemporary issues through colloquia, roundtables, conferences, and research presentations. The 2025 edition will have a virtual stage, scheduled for October 15th, 16th, and 17th.

In this 2025 edition, topics such as neoliberalism and religion; perspectives on social transformations in Brazil; challenges of democratization; digital media, politics, and religious boundaries; conservatism and gender; education for ethnic-racial relations and equity and diversity from the Black, Indigenous, and Quilombola perspectives will be discussed.

"It is very important that the annual Anpocs meetings bring together professors, researchers, and intellectuals committed to the consolidation of democracy," said Anpocs president Maria Filomena Gregori, who met with Unicamp's rector, Paulo Cesar Montagner, earlier this week to discuss details of the event's organization.

"This is a meeting of an association that will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year; and the University will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2026, both preserving democratic values," Gregori added.

The president emphasized that the event addresses topics from a scientific perspective, with the production of data and knowledge, the formulation of public policies, and the consolidation of minority rights. "Therefore, it is crucial, at this time, that we have these interactions," she concluded.

This year's conference is expected to occupy 33 rooms across 11 university campuses, with activities taking place throughout the day and evening. For its 48th edition, which will take place in 2024—also held at Unicamp—the event had 2,3 registered participants.

According to Montagner, Unicamp is open to hosting future Anpocs conferences. "We are proud to host the event, both for the atmosphere it creates and because it positions Unicamp as a focal point for discussions on the country's central problems and major contemporary issues," said the rector.

The meeting was also attended by Professor Mário Medeiros, a professor at IFCH and director of publications at Anpocs, and Bruno Ranieri, the association's manager. Also present were Professors Sávio Cavalcante, Chief of Staff, Osvaldir Taranto, and Zigomar Menezes de Souza, Deputy Chief of Staff.
