Unicamp's Executive Directorate for Human Rights (DEDH) and the Vladimir Herzog Institute announced the results of the IV Unicamp-Instituto Vladimir Herzog Academic Recognition Award in Human Rights. In the edition, referring to work completed in 2023, 14 research studies were chosen, distributed across five areas – exact sciences, engineering and technology; biological and health sciences; human, social and economic sciences; arts, communication and language; and education. Of the 14 winners, 12 were performed by women.
The award – which included 133 works evaluated – reaffirms science's commitment to promoting the dignity of life and is awarded to undergraduate, master's and doctoral research carried out in public higher education institutions in the State of São Paulo. “These were high-quality works,” said professor Wagner Romão, from the Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences (IFCH) at Unicamp and coordinator of the award evaluation committee. “Excellent projects, so the judging panel had a lot of difficulty making the selection,” he added.
Romão recalls that, in addition to the awards, scheduled to take place on May 23rd, this year's edition will feature, on the same day, a seminar in which the winning works will be presented. “This will even be a way to better explore the work and reflect in more depth on the projects”, he explains. The two events will take place in the Raízes Auditorium, in the Basic Cycle.
The fourth edition of the award will feature three special honors. The first will go to Mãe Dango and Mãe Corajacy, traditional leaders of the African Bantu culture in Campinas who work in the fight against prejudice and religious racism. Both created the Washing of the Staircase of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Campinas, an event that will complete 40 years of history in 2025. There will also be a tribute to the group Mães pela Diversidade, a non-governmental organization (NGO) that brings together mothers and fathers of children, teenagers and adults LGBTQIA+. The body works to welcome families, raise awareness among health agents, the Judiciary and the Legislature and disseminate information that tries to transform society into a more respectful environment for this part of the population.
Finally, the award will honor the Brazilian Interdisciplinary AIDS Association (Abia) – one of the oldest NGOs operating in the country and which works in collective health from the perspective of human rights, with the principles of solidarity, social justice and of democracy. The event will also feature the screening of two short films. One deals with the trajectory of Mãe Dango and Mãe Corajacy and the other, the history of Mães pela Diversidade.
Consolidation and scope of the award
Romão says that one of the challenges for the next editions is to increase the scope of the award. “We are extensively working to publicize the idea and objectives of the award among other public universities in São Paulo, federal universities and the Federal Institute,” he stated. “The award is already consolidated. What we want now is to expand its reach.”
