A Note on Dressel 20 amphora stamps from Testaccio and the evidence from other archaeological sites
Pedro Paulo A. Funari
Monte Testaccio is a unique archaeological site. This dump for discarded olive oil amphorae has been producing exceptional epigraphic data, particularly painted inscriptions and stamps, with very accurate dating. Thanks to the use of consular dating, it is now possible to date a number of Dressel 20 amphora stamps to precise years, like A.D. 149 and 161, for instance. It is much rarer to find contextual dates elsewhere as precise but there is a growing body of evidence regarding Dressel 20 stamps found elsewhere. The aim of this note is to study a few examples of stamps with difference in their dating at Testaccio and elsewhere, in order to discuss the possible explanations for stamps used for several decades.
